Mumbai: Former Test wicketkeeper Sameer Dighe was on Friday named the new coach of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team for the next domestic cricket season. “Sameer Dighe has been appointed as the Mumbai Ranji Team Coach for the season 2017-18,” the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) said in a media release. The 48-year-old Dighe, who played six Tests and 23 One-day Internationals (ODI) for India, will take over the mantle from last season’s coach Chandrakant Pandit. Another former Test cricketer Praveen Amre was also in the running before MCA’s Cricket Improvement Committee, headed by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, put the stamp on Dighe’s name. Agarkar: My job is to select players who can serve Mumbai for 5 to 10 years

He revealed that he would concentrate on picking up players for long-term, who could serve Mumbai for the next 5 to10 years at least. He also aimed at picking up the players, who will go on to represent India in the long run. Agarkar, however, also praised former selector Milind Rege for a doing an outstanding job for all these years for Mumbai, as he looks to repeat the same performance as delivered by Rege. “Hopefully, we will select players who will play for India, but at the same time, our job is to tap some guys who can serve Mumbai for the next five to 10 years,” said Agarkar, as reported by mid-day. “Rege was the guy who picked me for Tatas. I am not replacing him, I have been asked to be a chief selector. He served Mumbai cricket well for so many years. He has done such a good job over the years. Hopefully, I can do the same,” Agarkar added.
