Gujarat conceded the first-innings lead to Vidarbha on day three of their seventh round Elite Group A 2018-19 Ranji Trophy game at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur, despite the season’s fourth best figures of 8/148 from left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai.
Fifties to Ganesh Satish (75), Akshay Wakhare (55) and Akshay Wadkar (88) took Vidarbha to 485, a lead of 164 over Gujarat for whom Desai, in his tenth first-class match, had figures of 43.5-7-148-8.
This comfortably surpassed the 18-year-old’s previous best of 6/80. Desai, who has also represented India Under-19s, is the fourth bowler to claim eight wickets in an innings this Ranji Trophy season.
His figures of 8/148 are the fifth best in Gujarat’s first-class history after Jassu Patel’s 8/21 in 1960-61, Rajesh Dhruve’s 8/31 in 2012-13, Chintan Gaja’s 8/40 in 2017-18 and Patel’s 8/53 in 1950-51.
