Delhi batsmen again failed to deliver as Punjab strengthened their chance of recording an innings win in their 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, Elite B, Round 4 match at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium on Thursday. After Punjab were bowled out for 282 in their first innings, Delhi were reduced to 106/6, still trailing the visitors by 69 runs at stumps on Day 2.
But Delhi were given solid start by their opening pair of Gautam Gambhir and Hiten Dalal. The duo added 72 runs between them before being separated. Left-arm spinner Vinay Chaudhary triggered a collapse in the 24th over as he got rid of Hiten (27) and Dhruv Shorey (0) in the space of four deliveries.
Siddarth Kaul, who took six wickets in the first innings, then landed two body blows that included the scalps of captain Nitish Rana (10) and Gambhir (60) in an over to leave the hosts tottering at 99/4.
Earlier, Punjab skipper Mandeep Singh fell 10 short of a century as his team suffered a collapse of their own. From 227/4, they were bowled out for 282.
For Delhi, Simarjeet Singh and Vikas Mishra picked up four wickets each while Pukil Narang and Rana chipped in with a wicket apiece.
Punjab took a big 175-run first innings lead and unless the Delhi lower order manages something special, they will surely return home with an outright win.
