Ranji Trophy Elite B Round 4

Tamil Nadu secured the first innings lead over Bengal after the duo of Rahil Shah and M Mohammed ran through the visitors to bowl them out for 189 in 63.5 overs. On Day 2 of their 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, Round 4 match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, hosts Tamil Nadu finished the day at 12/1 with an overall lead of 86 runs.

Bengal would have been bowled for a much lower total had it not been for opener Abhishek Raman’s 98 off 173 as he waged a lone battle. Barring him, there was no contribution of any significance with wicketkeeper-batsman Sreevats Goswami scoring 19 – the next best of their innings.

Mohammed struck early for Tamil Nadu as he had opener Koushik Ghosh caught for two. They never recovered from the early blow and kept losing wickets regularly.

Mohammed blew away their top order inside six overs including the prized scalp of captain Manoj Tiwary (1). Then Rahil took over as he ran through their middle order and also claimed the wicket of top-scorer Abhishek who departed after hitting 10 fours and a six.

Rahil finished with 5/46 while Mohammed took 4/39 as Bengal took 74-run lead.

Earlier, Baba Aparajith found some solid support from Mohammed (24) as he completed his century – his ninth in first-class cricket. Before Ishan Porel broke the partnership, the duo had added 64 runs between them. Aparajith was the ninth wicket to fall after scoring 103 which had eight fours and a six in it. With the scalp of Rahil, Porel completed his five-wicket haul as TN were bowled out for 263 in 106 overs.

After gaining the lead, Tamil Nadu lost opener Kaushik Gandhi off the fifth delivery of their second dig and were 12/1 in three when the stumps were drawn.

Brief Scores: Tamil Nadu 263 and 12/1 (Abhinav Mukund 2*; Ashok Dinda ¼) lead Bengal 189 by 86 runs
