Maharashtra were bundled out for 230 by Gujarat with middle order batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad top scoring with 70 on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy 2018-19 Round 8 Elite A match in Pune on Sunday. Skipper Rahul Tripathi chipped in with a valuable 62. Gujarat were 41/0, still adrift by 189 runs at stumps.

Put into bat, fast bowler Chintan Gaja accounted for both the Maharashtra openers. He cleaned up Chirag Khurana for a three-ball duck in the second over of the day and then had Swapnil Gugale caught behind by Dhruv Raval for 21, before sending captain Ankit Bawne for a duck two balls later.

Maharashtra were reeling at 36/3 in the 13th over. Gaikwad and Tripathi steered the ship to safety with a 122-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Tripathi, who brought up his fifty, was the first to depart for 62 after he was caught behind off Roosh Kalaria. Tripathi’s knock was decorated with 10 boundaries and two sixes. Gaikwad, who was dismissed by Piyush Chawla three overs later, struck 12 boundaries in his 128-ball 70.

Gaja then returned to see the back of Rohit Motwani for 10. Anupam Sanklecha and Aniruddha Palkar added 23 and 24 to the tally before they were dismissed by Chawla and Gaja respectively.

Gaja returned with figures of five for 57 in his 18 overs, while Chawla snapped three wickets in 10.1 overs going for 39 runs.
