In an inconsequential match, left-arm spinner Avinash Yadav’s four wickets helped Railways skittle Maharashtra for 70 on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy 2018-19 Round 9 Elite A match at Delhi’s Karnail Singh Stadium on Monday.
Opting to bat, Maharashtra saw both their openers – JS Pande and VH Zol – register ducks. None of the batsman showed any resistance to the bowling attack, Captain Rahul Tripathi added just 8 to the total before he fell to Yadav. Satyajeet Bachhav top scored with just 15 runs with as many as seven players departing with single-digit scores.
Yadav returned with excellent figures of four for 38 in his 12 overs.
Railways’ reply was not without drama. However, an unbeaten half-century from captain Mahesh Rawat kept ensured the first-innings lead with Bacchav claiming seven wickets – his best in first-class cricket – to improve on his previous best of 4/81.
Rawat struck five boundaries in his 72-ball 52 not out. He had Anureet Singh, who was yet to get off the mark, when stumps was drawn. For Maharashtra, Bacchav, the star of the bowlers, went for 73 runs in his 28 overs.
