Star Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made history on Thursday as he surpassed Australia’s Nathan Lyon to become the 7th highest wicket-taker in the history of Test cricket. The 38-year-old accomplished this feat by claiming 3 crucial Kiwi wickets. Ashwin dismissed both the openers, Tom Latham and Devon Conway before also picking up the wicket of Will Young.
With these scalps, Ashwin now stands at 531 wickets in red-ball cricket overtaking Lyon who remains at 530 wickets. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top when both of them will go up against each other in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series.
In addition to this record, Ashwin also proved his dominance in the World Test Championship (WTC) by becoming the highest wicket-taker of the competition, again overtaking Lyon. Ashwin now stands at 189 WTC wickets while Lyon is at 187 WTC wickets.
This impressive tally highlights Ashwin’s consistency and match-winning ability in the WTC, where he has played 39 matches compared to Lyon’s 43. Ashwin’s performances have been pivotal for India, particularly in home conditions where he has turned out to be a nightmare for the opposing batting orders on many occasions.

Another record which Ashwin can break in this series is for the most 5-wicket-hauls in Test cricket. He is currently tied with legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne at 37 Test fifers each. He can break this tie and become the bowler with the second-most fifers in Test cricket behind Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan who has 63 fifers.
