Ricky Ponting, who conceded on Tuesday that his one-day career is over, hopes to travel to England as a part of Australia squad for the Ashes series next year.
However, the middle-order batsman has confirmed that it is not only the Ashes which he wants to play, but an opportunity which he will relish.
“If I’m a good enough player to do that then it’d be great to go back there one more time and hopefully have a few better memories of England than what I’ve had the last couple of tours, said Ponting, who is the only Australian captain to have lost Ashes in England – in 2005 and in 2009.
“Everybody is (after redemption) as far as Ashes cricket is concerned,” he was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Many feel that Ponting, who will be into his 39th year by the time of next Ashes, can take some inspiration from Sir Donald Bradman. Bradman was two weeks shy of his 40th birthday when he appeared in his final Ashes Test.
Ponting says he has an undying desire to play for Australia.
“I love the game and I love every opportunity I get to represent my country. One thing I’ve always been conscious of is not letting my team-mates down and not letting my country down … I’m not going to keep playing and drag myself through times where I don’t think I can play great cricket.
“I’ve proved to a lot of people this summer I can still play great cricket for Australia and be as good as anybody out there on the field. That’s what I’m planning to do for the next period of time,” Ponting expressed.
