News of the relationship between India captain Virat Kohli and head coach and former player Anil Kumble going cold has been making rounds for quite a long time now. While the success rate of the coach-captain duo seems to touch new heights, reports suggest everything is not alright between them personally. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)-appointed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, together with BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary, CEO Rahul Johri and General Manager (cricket) Dr MV Sridhar, met Kohli recently upon the matter. The discussion lasted for over an hour and the outcome, as reported, says the stale relation between Kohli and Kumble has gone beyond any repair. Michael Clarke on Virat Kohli-Anil Kumble saga: ‘Great relationships have greater challenges’
“Kohli is very clear about where he stands vis-a-vis Kumble. It seems the relationship is beyond the repair stage, at least from Kohli’s side. However, the CAC will now meet Kumble and see if a patch-up is possible,” a source told The Telegraph. “Kumble’s track record as head coach is almost without a blemish. How does one remove him? On what grounds? To what extent should the captain have a say? Also, can we have a situation where Kohli, no matter how successful and brilliant he is, gets complete charge? Big questions need to be settled,” he added.
BCCI extended Kumble’s contract, which was supposed to last till ICC Champions Trophy 2017, till India tour of West Indies. Kumble has been added as a direct entry for the post of India head coach while five others, including Virender Sehwag, have applied for the same.
