Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) take on Gujarat Lions (GL) in Match 39 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune, on Monday night. GL were a tad unfortunate in their previous game against Mumbai Indians (MI), wherein they crawled back into the match to force a tie. But Mumbai Indians won the match in the super over, thanks to an excellent bowling display from Jasprit Bumrah. GL can however take many positives from that game. RPS, on the other hand, will go into this game at the back of a comprehensive 61-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). RPS have been in excellent form lately; they have lost just once in their last five matches. Full Cricket Scorecard, Rising Pune Supergiant vs Gujarat Lions, IPL 2017, Match 39

While RPS still remain in contention for a place in the top four of IPL 10 points table at the end of the first round, GL will not only have to win their remaining games, but also hope for the results of other matches to go their way. RPS too cannot afford to be laidback. They will look to gather as many points as possible in their remaining five matches to ensure they are safely into the top four. If RPS do make it to the playoffs, it will be a huge step up for the franchise especially after finishing IPL 2016 in the last spot.

RPS made a right call to bring in Lockie Ferguson in the previous game as he turned out to be the match-winner, after setting RCB a modest target of 158. Also, Daniel Christian s consistency with the ball kept Ben Stokes out of the playing XI. RPS will most probably not think about replacing either of them in this game as they are in good form. Imran Tahir too is irreplaceable as he has been RPS most consistent performer with the ball this season.

RPS, however, can add to their batting and bowling strength by including Rajat Bhatia in the XI. Deepak Chahar is the likely candidate to make way for him. GL have a strong bowling line-up and a bit more depth in their batting can do them a world of good.

The form of Ajinkya Rahane too is a bit inconsistent. RPS will hope that the Mumbai lad gives RPS a good start, along with Rahul Tripathi, who now has six back-to-back 30-plus scores in the IPL.

Rising Pune Supergiant likely XI: Steven Smith (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul Tripathi, MS Dhoni (wk), Manoj Tiwary, Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar/Rajat Bhatia, Jaydev Unadkat, Lockie Ferguson, Imran Tahir.

Having said that, GL suffered a major blow when they learnt about their best fast bowler Andrew Tye, that he will not take further part in the tournament. The Australian dislocated his shoulder while attempting to stop a ball in the game against MI. While Tye s absence will be a major loss for GL, they have the likes of Dwayne Smith as well as Jason Roy in the squad, who are the likely candidates to take Tye s place in the XI.

Tye picked up a hat-trick last time these two sides met. Smith can turn out to be a handy bowler in the middle overs as well, which is why he is most likely to get the vacant spot. Roy s inclusion however would mean that he opens the innings with Brendon McCullum, with Ishan Kishan dropping into the middle-order. McCullum in his last three matches has been dismissed in scores of single digits and GL would dearly want for him to fire at the top.

Gujarat Lions likely XI: Suresh Raina (c), Brendon McCullum, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Ishan Kishan, Dwayne Smith/Jason Roy, Aaron Finch, James Faulkner, Ravindra Jadeja, Basil Thampi, Ankit Soni, Irfan Pathan.

Head-to-head: GL have never lost to RPS in their last three meetings. The last time these two teams met was on April 14, when Tye s hat-trick sunk RPS. He finished with 5 for 17. But GL won the match easily by 7 wickets and with 12 balls to spare. This is the second time GL and RPS are playing on this venue. GL chased down 194 last time these sides met at this venue despite Steven Smith s 54-ball 101.

Prediction: The loss of Tye is a major blow and hence GL will need someone else to take up the responsibility of leading the pace attack. James Faulkner has had a decent season with the ball, but it will have to be a collective effort from GL to contain the batsmen. With Tye out, Basil Thampi becomes the leading wicket-taker with 6 scalps in 8 matches.

Tye had picked up 12 wickets in six games for GL. If McCullum, Finch and Raina fire at the top, GL will have a big score on the board. However, RPS have a destructive middle-order, even if their top-order fails. Their bowlers had a good day against RCB, but that will not be the case every day. If the GL top-order gets going, RPS will require a Plan B to get them back into the game.

GL have a lot of catching up to do. The performances in the last few games will give them confidence, but RPS have been in great form and will not be easy to beat. It might once again come down to the bowlers to win the teams this contest.
