Playing for UAE against Papua New Guinea (PNG) at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, captain Rohan Mustafa single-handedly pulled off a 103-run defeat on the tourists on Tuesday, April 4. Opening the batting, Mustafa hit his way to a 125-ball 109 (with 7 fours and a six) before he was the fourth batsman to get out, with the team score on 208. Mustafa added 101 for the first wicket with Mohammed Qasim (33) and 69 for the third with Rameez Shahzad (37). He made sure the UAE lower-order batsmen got a platform on which they could launch late onslaughts. With Ahmed Raza hitting out lustily, UAE finished on 251 for 9 despite the probing off-breaks of captain Assad Vala (3 for 30). But Mustafa’s role did not end there. PNG were off to a brisk start, and at 85 balls into their match they had put up 76 runs with openers Tony Ura and Vani Morea still at the crease. Then Raza had Ura caught-behind, triggering a collapse. Mustafa ran through the rest, having Morea caught at long-on (by Qasim), Dogodo Bau at cover (by Mohammad Naveed), Sese Bau (bowled, off-stump), Norman Vanua at square-leg (by Amjad Javed), and Mahuru Dai (bowled). Mustafa finished with splendid figures of 8.2-0-25-5, the second-best figures in the history of UAE. Zahoor Khan (6 for 34) is the only one with better figures, and he had done that a month ago against Ireland.
Mustafa also became the third cricketer in history to score a hundred and take 5 wickets in an ODI. The first two were Viv Richards and Paul Collingwood.
