Due to overnight rain in Kanpur, the match officials weren’t able to prepare the field on time and the toss was delayed for some time. Eventually, the toss took place at 10am, 30 minutes after it was scheduled to happen. As Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma won the toss, he made a decision that left everyone surprised.
The Indian skipper took a bold decision and elected to bowl first which is not an everyday thing in matches held in Kanpur. The pitch at the Green Park stadium is considered to be quite friendly for the batters so the commentators were left baffled with Rohit’s decision.
On the other hand, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also seemed to be happy with Rohit electing to bowl first as he later said that if he would have won the toss, then he would have elected to bat first.
Interestingly, this is the first time in 9 years that India have won the toss and have decided to bowl first in a Test match on home soil. Rohit’s decision to bowl first also marks the first instance of teams winning the toss opting to bowl first in consecutive men’s Tests in India.
It will be very interesting to see if Rohit’s decision proves to be fruitful for the Men in Blue. If it doesn’t then Bangladesh can go on to post a massive first inning total on the board.
