Rohit Sharma, according to former Indian cricketer RP Singh, has been “over-thinking” and “over-cautious” throughout the current Test series against England. When the team most needed him, the Indian skipper has struggled to score runs. Rohit is the cornerstone of India’s batting lineup in the absence of KL Rahul (injured), Shreyas Iyer (dropped), and Virat Kohli (withdrawn for personal reasons). However, the opener has only managed to score24,39,14, and 13 in the first two Test matches.
The thing that worries more than the low returns is Rohit’s unclear strategy. The same batsman, who during the ODI World Cup batted only in one direction regardless of the opponent or match circumstances, has abruptly chosen to go back in his bubble. One mishap in the opening Test match of Hyderabad’s innings was all that was required.

An overly cautious Rohit is bad for the team, according to RP Singh, who has played a lot of cricket both with and against the current captain of India. The former left-arm bowler advised Rohit to follow his instincts and try to smash some boundaries.
“Rohit Sharma is overthinking. He’s thinking about playing a big knock, build at least two-three partnerships in the absence of other main players to take the innings forward. He’s being over-cautious in trying to do that. He’s not that kind of a player. His style is different. He is a free-flowing batter and that is missing. He can play his shots. An over-cautious Rohit is not good both as a batter and as a person,” he said on Cricbuzz.

One of the main reasons for Rohit’s cautious approach could be the lack of experience in India’s middle-order. In the last Test, there was a debutant, Rajat Patidar, instead of Kohli, Rahul, or Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja is expected to return for the third Test in Rajkot, but Rahul has not yet fully recovered from his injury and Shreyas Iyer has been dropped because of his poor form. This means that another debut, Sarfaraz Khan, is highly probable..
