On Sunday, March 17, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Royal Challengers Bangalore Women broke the franchise’s trophy drought by defeating Delhi Capitals Women in the final of the Women’s Premier League 2024 (WPL 2024). Opting to bat first, Delhi Capitals struggled and were bundled out for a mere 113 runs in their allotted 20 overs due to RCB’s dominant spinners. In response, RCB successfully chased down the target.
The chase commenced positively as openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine (32 off 27) put together 49 runs for the first wicket from 49 balls. Shikha Pandey broke their partnership by dismissing Devine lbw in the ninth over. However, captain Mandhana (31 off 39), along with Ellyse Perry (35* off 37) and Richa Ghosh (17* off 14), ensured stability in the middle overs, guiding their team to victory in the final over.
After winning the toss in the major game, the Delhi Capitals got off to a fast start, with Shafali Verma leading the charge. The DC opener thrashed RCB bowlers for boundaries all over the park and took full advantage of the powerplay. Verma smashed Sophie Molineux over her head for a maximum after scoring seven runs off the first five balls to start her innings.
