Colombo: Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar launched an initiative aimed at improving hygiene among children in South Asia, where millions have no access to toilets. Tendulkar, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), was promoting the “wash in school” drive aimed at bringing down the death toll from poor sanitation. He showed local children at a hotel here how to use soap and water to wash their hands before meals and avoid the risk of disease. “My mother never allowed me to eat before washing hands! We must ensure all children learn such habits,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying by official twitter handle of UNICEF Sri Lanka. Earlier, he reckons that Indian cricket is moving in “good direction” though there is still room for improvement. Tendulkar said as long as there is drive, things will be on track for the young team Indian team, which is currently engaged in a home series against South Africa. “Yeah, it has been moving in good direction. I definitely feel we need to play better cricket and there is room for improvement.
