The debate on Bharat Ratna for Sachin Tendulkar is likely to be put to rest as reports emerge that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has already forwarded a recommendation on the same to President Pranab Mukherjee. The legendary batsman is likely to be conferred with the title on the upcoming Republic Day in 2014.
According to a Zee News report, several sportspersons and politicians have backed the move to confer the highest civilian award on Tendulkar. Some of these include, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajeev Shukla, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.
“He is retiring from cricket after making several records that will not be broken for the next 100 years and has earned respect and reputation worldwide. Although I can’t say anything in this regard, the final decision will be of the President,” MoS PMO V Narayanasamy was quoted as saying.
The rules were for awarding the title was changed in 2010 which allow the highest civilian honour to be awarded to exceptional services in any field.
Tendulkar announced his retirement on October 10, 2013 and ever since then the Little Master has been showered with various felicitations. Tendulkar will retire after his 200th and final Test against West Indies.
