Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar’s name has not been recommended for the highest civilian honour of the country, Bharat Ratna Award, according to reports.
The sports ministry has recommended the names of hockey legend Major Dhyanchand and mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, as sources have informed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did not recommend Tendulkar’s name for the award, IBN reported.
A few days ago, it was reported that the Bharat Ratna can now be awarded in recognition of exceptional services or performance of the highest order “in any field of human endeavour” covering almost every field which was not in the purview.
The award was earlier restricted to fields such as arts, literature, science and public service, as the government found it difficult to consider those outside these fields including sports.
Many politicians from Maharashtra had been pushing for the Bharat Ratna Award for the Little Master, which prompted sports minister Ajay Maken to write to the Prime Minister’s Office regarding the issue.
The Indian Premier League commissioner and the vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rajiv Shukla tried to explain their failure to send the recommendation saying “the ministry itself decides the names and not BCCI.”
