Left-handed Indian batter, Sai Sudharsan may have just caused a fresh headache for the India head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee by smashing his maiden County century while playing for Surrey on Friday.
Batting at the sixth spot against Nottinghamshire, Sudharsan scored 105 off 178 deliveries. His impressive inning included 10 boundaries and a solitary six as Surrey amassed 525 runs in the opening innings.
This was Sudharsan’s third appearance for Surrey. Earlier in 2023, Vikram Solanki, director of cricket at Gujarat Titans, who also served as Surrey coach helped him in getting an entry into the County side. Though, Sudharsan was only able to make 2 appearances, he did notch up a 73-run knock straightaway for Surrey.
The same year, he earned his debut international cap for India after appearing in the ODI tour of South Africa, where he scored 2 half-centuries. Later in 2024, he was handed his debut T20I cap in the tour of Zimbabwe, however he did not get an opportunity to bat.
Sudharsan also had a big chance to play for the Men in Blue earlier this year during England’s tour of India. However, his possible debut was ruled out due to an injury and it was Devdutt Padikkal who was handed his maiden cap.
He may have been denied of that big opportunity, but Sudharsan would be looking to impress the selectors yet again with his performance in the Duleep Trophy starting from next week.
Sudharsan is part of Team C, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad. An impressive performance could see him earn a spot in the Indian squad for either of the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand.
