Skipper Sana Mir achieved a new record, as she became the first Pakistan Women’s cricketer to have picked 100 ODI wickets. Sana dismissed Salma Khatun and Jahanara Alam to get to her 100th wicket, during Match No. 8 of ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2017, against Bangladesh Women. She thus became the 15th player overall to have picked as many wickets. She is the fourth quickest in the world to have reached the milestone, taking only 92 matches to do so. Pakistan bagged their first match of the tournament, defeating Bangladesh Women by 67 runs.
Pakistan Women, who suffered a defeat against South Africa Women in their last match, posted a challenging target of 228 for Bangladesh Women. The top- and middle-order heavily contributed, helping the team reach 227 all-out. Bismah Maroof top-scored with 35 off 52.
Chasing the target, Bangladesh batters failed to put up a significant performance barring the 41-run knock from wicketkeeper-batter Nigar Sultana. On the other hand, Sanjida Islam’s 34, at the top-order, provided solid foundation for the batters to come but was not enough to take the side to a victorious end. Bangladesh were eventually bundled out for 160. Nashra Sandhu picked 2 wickets, while Ghulam Fatima was the highest wicket-taker of the innings with 3 scalps.
Confident Pakistan Women will next face Papua New Guinea in the competition on Friday at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground, Colombo.
