Half centuries by three batsmen and a three-wicket burst by medium-pacer N R Sawke put Madhya Pradesh in complete control of the four-day C K Nayudu Under-22 Trophy quarterfinal tie against Mumbai.

Having bowled out Mumbai for a paltry 109 in their first innings, the visitors scored 318 runs on board for a lead of 209 and then reduced the hosts to 86/5 at the end of the second day’s play at the Brabourne Stadium here.

Mumbai still need to score 124 more runs if they want to avoid an embarrassing innings defeat.

Earlier, resuming the day at 155/3, Madhya Pradesh reached 318 largely due to the contribution of H J Bhatia (74; 114b, 4×7, 6×1), V S Verma (71; 135b, 4×10, 6×2) and a quickfire 66 by A N Sharma (74b, 4×8, 6×1).

Leg-spinner S Gorivale was the most successful bowler for Mumbai with figures of 6-72.

Sawke then struck thrice with Mumbai’s score at 26, while left-armer AP Singh accounted for the other two wickets.

Only S Lad showed some resistance for the hosts and was unbeaten on (41; 87b, 4×7). (PTI)
