Former champions and hosts Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batsmen Shakib Al Hasan and Yusuf Pathan put up a record fifth wicket stand of 134, as they steered KKR to an above average total of 158 for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs, against new franchise and visitors Gujarat Lions (GL), in Match 38 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016, at the historic Eden Gardens Stadium on Sunday. Earlier, GL skipper Suresh Raina won the toss and elected to field first, as he made a change in the form of Parvin Tambe, who replaced Pradeep Sangawan, while KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir moved in with an unchanged skipper, following their previous convincing win over KXIP on Wednesday. The KKR openers were off to a shaky start, as with just 15 runs on the board, it was Gambhir, who fell for mere five to Praveen Kumar, who played him down in the third over, while in the same over, it was Manish Pandey, who too fell for an unfortunate duck, after being caught behind by Dinesh Karthik. With six runs added to the total, it was opener Robin Uthappa, who fell for mere 14 to Dhawal Kulkarni, after being caught behind again in the fourth over, while three runs later, it was Suryakumar Yadav, who fell for mere four ti Dwayne Smith, after being brilliantly caught by Raina at slips, in the sixth over. As KKR looked in deep trouble, with four of their crucial top order batsmen back in pavilion within the mandatory powerplay of six overs, it was the pair of Shakib Al Hasan and Yusuf Pathan, who steadied the KKR innings as they both batted sensibly. and made sure that they did not commit any foul mistakes or show any kind of hurry while going for the runs. The eventually brought up the 50-run stand, with Shakib contributing 20, and Yusuf contributing 29, along with an extra.
