Former Australian legend Shane Warne, considered as the greatest spin sensation in history of the game, had advice to country’s tennis sensation Nick Kyrgios, asking him to not lose his cool. This is stark in contrast to what Warne actually was during his cricketing career. The 45-year old leg-break bowler was known to be involved in controversies both on and off the field. Talking of 20-year old Kyrgios, he has emerged as one of the finest tennis talents Australia has produced in recent times. Some tennis experts have also commented that if he works hard and shows high commitment levels he may well be ranked alongside greatest tennis players from Australia and may rank among the likes of Rod Laver and Roy Emerson when he ends his career. In 2014, Kyrgios reached the quarter-finals of 2014 Wimbledon Championships, defeating ATP Number one Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet in previous rounds. He also reached the quarter-finals of the 2015 Australian Open where he lost to Andy Murray in three sets. Kyrgios was booed by spectators during his game against Richard Gasquet. But the real issue started in a match at the 2015 Rogers Cup. Kyrgios sledged his opponent Stan Wawrinka saying, “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that mate.” Microphones recorded his voice and ultimately Kyrgios was fined US$10,000 by ATP. Kyrgios also had to apologise to Wawrinka which he did. Now, in the US open this week, Kyrgios lost to Andy Murray in the first round. He was frustrated by the defeat and said, “Middle of the game. Unreal. Such bullshit, fucking bullshit.” He said this because some fans tried to enter the stadium during his serve which distracted him. Warne wrote a letter on Facebook to Kyrgios which had words of wisdom for the young tennis player:
“Dear Nick Kyrgios, We all realise you’re only 20 & have a lot to learn buddy. But please don’t waste your talent, everyone in the world, especially us Australians want to respect u. Remember respect is way more important than being liked, u need to respect the game of tennis & yourself. We all make mistakes, but it’s how we learn from them & the way we conduct ourselves when we lose that shows true character. You’re testing our patience mate, show us what you’re made of & how hungry you are to be the best in the world, it’s time to step up & start winning, no excuses. No shame in losing, but show us you will never give up, that you will give it everything to be the best you can be, respect is earned not given ! I believe in you & know you can do it, but now’s the time my friend… (sic)”
