Australia has dropped batsman Rob Quiney for Shane Watson and named three extra fast bowlers in a 14-man squad announced on Monday for this week’s final Test against South Africa in Perth.
As well as including fit-again allrounder Watson, selectors called up pace trio Josh Hazlewood, John Hastings and Mitchell Johnson with fast bowler James Pattinson ruled out by a side strain for the rest of the home Test season.
Quiney was dropped after making a pair of ducks in the second Adelaide Test against the Proteas, which finished in a draw in Adelaide on Monday.
Australia captain Michael Clarke said the addition of the three new pacemen was designed to cover fast bowlers Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus in case they didn’t recover from bowling long spells in the Adelaide heat in Pattinson’s absence.
While Hastings, Hazelwood and Johnson have been added to the squad, left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc, 12th man in the initial two Tests, is expected to get a start in Perth.
The series is all-square following a series-opening draw in Brisbane.
