Sharad Pawar has expressed his interest in contesting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) elections that are expected to be held sometime in the near future. The former BCCI chief made his candidacy public with International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman N Srinivasan‘s chances of contesting the elections becoming increasingly slim.

The Supreme Court of India recently announced their verdict on the ongoing 2013 IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal, in which the apex court stated that Srinivasan could not contest the BCCI elections unless he gave up his stakes in the cash-rich league in the form of indirect ownership of Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The BCCI elections were postponed twice as a result of the trial, with the Supreme Court ordering the BCCI on January 22 to hold its elections within six weeks.

According to a report by NDTV Sports, Pawar, who is currently the President of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), emerged as a strong candidate with Srinivasan’s chances looking doubtful. Pawar had earlier declined from contesting the elections due to Srinivasan’s strong influence in the East Zone, who will be nominating the President in the upcoming elections.
