The No. 10 jersey evokes a plethora of emotions in the average Indian cricket fan. It used to be, after all, donned by Sachin Tendulkar during his storied career. They were surprised — some of them unpleasantly — when Shardul Thakur had a big ‘10’ on the blue jersey on his debut, during the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka earlier this year. The jersey caught everyone’s attention. Twitterati had gone berserk that day, criticising Thakur for this supposed sacrilege.

Some fans had asked BCCI to ‘retire’ the No. 10 jersey. Others had requested Thakur to change his jersey. In response, Thakur had cited a numerologist’s advice for selecting the jersey.

It now seems that the requests and criticisms have hit Thakur hard. Returning to the squad for practice during the New Zealand series, it was noticed Thakur had changed his jersey number to 54 as reported by The Hindu. As for the numerologist’s advice, that had certainly not worked, for Thakur had an indifferent debut. It is not clear whether the new number is the outcome of updated advice.
