The Indian cricket team is set to lock horns against New Zealand in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy on March 2, Sunday. This is the final group stage for both the teams who have already booked their spot in the semi-finals. The match between the two teams is scheduled to take place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Ahead of the match, multiple media reports have come out stating that vice-captain Shubman Gill could be elevated to the role of captain for the clash against the Black Caps as skipper Rohit Sharma sustained a hamstring injury while fielding in the match against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday.
According to the reports, if Rohit decides to skip the match then the captaincy will be handed to Gill. The latter was announced as the Men in Blue’s vice-captain when Ajit Agarkar announced India’s 15-member squad for the tournament during a press conference.
Though Gill has never captained India in ODIs, he does have the experience of leading th Men in Blue in T20Is. The batter has recently been in incredible form and is even the number 1 batter in the ICC ODI rankings.

Gill has so far played 5 ODI matches in 2025, and has scored a total of 406 runs including 2 centuries and 2 half-centuries each. He will be trying to continue this red-hot form in the match against the Black Caps and in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy as well.
