Former umpire Simon Taufel has been invited to deliver the 2013 MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lord’s on Wednesday. Taufel will be delivering the lecture on July 24 later this year.
“After the initial shock of being asked, I am delighted, honoured and humbled to be able to participate in such an important cricket event,” Taufel was quoted as saying by lords.org
“I look forward to representing umpiring in this fine tradition and all that Mr Cowdrey stood for,” he added.
Taufel, the five-time ICC umpire of the Year, will become the first umpire to deliver this lecture since its inception in 2001.
The lecture is named after former England skipper Colin Cowdrey, who along with Ted Dexter strongly fought for the Spirit of Cricket to be included as a Preamble to the 2000 Code of the Laws of Cricket.
Taufel has officiated as an umpire in 74 Tests, 174 ODIs and 34 T20 internationals
Sunil Gavaskar, Adam Gilchrist, Tony Greig, Martin Crowe, Clive Lloyd, Christopher-Martin Jenkins, Kumar Sangakkara and a few others have previously delivered the lecture at Lord’s
