Pakistan vs England, 3rd Test, Day 1: Sohail Khan’s maiden 5-for wraps up hosts for 297 at stumps

England tried to give strong fight against Pakistan with Moeen Ali and Gary Ballance securing fifties on Day 1 of 3rd Test at Edgbaston.

Pakistan’s comeback bowler Sohail Khan’s five-for ends England’s 1st innings for 297 at stumps on Day 1 of 3rd Test at Edgbaston. However, Pakistan’s usual heroes Yasir Shah and Mohammaed Aamer received a wicket and two wickets respectively after remaining wicketless until the end of the day. Apart from their usual heroes, Rahat Ali got two wickets under his belt. Meanwhile, England tried responding well turning the tables around after Tea with Gary Ballance and Moeen Ali’s fifties, although tilted the Pakistan way. As skipper Misbah-ul-Haq emphasised on crushing the pillars of England, his bowlers did just that and got early wickets in form of the top three batsmen of England. Ballance and Moeen, who were playing at 49 and 15 before heading for Tea, secured partnership of 60 runs to add some steadiness to England innings that ultimately went the Pakistan way before heading for Tea. But Yasir struck and got the wicket of Ballance, putting England innings to rest. Chris Woakes played few boundaries later and was gone as well with Rahat getting his second wicket for the day. When Moeen needed a support man on the other side, Stuart Broad just came in time to the rescue. Broad added his valuable knock of 13 to keep the scoreboard ticking, until Aamer found his way back in the game. Steven Finn and James Anderson tried to keep the innings in favor of England until the end of the day, but it reversed to Pakistan side.

Earlier, Sohail marked his return to Test cricket after a five-year absence with four wickets as Pakistan reduced England to 184 for five at tea. The 32-year-old right-arm quick removed a quartet of top-order batsman Alex Hales, Joe Root, James Vince and Jonny Bairstow on his way to tea with figures of 4 for 61 in 16 overs. Sohail was back into Test arena replacing their fast pacer Wahab Riaz for the 3rd Test. Sohail made most of his chance and got wickets in quick succession. Apart from Sohail, Rahat also got some wickets on hand. But it was Yasir, who went wicketless all these while, broke the England momentum and soon got a wicket to his name as well picking the major guy Ballance for 70. Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first. With the absence of Ben Stokes, England have called in Finn while Pakistan made second change calling Sami Aslam from the Under-19 team for Shan Masood. Pakistan shook off the top-order of England one after the other, claiming the Day 1 to their name.
