English County club Somerset have signed South Africa all-rounder Vernon Philander as their overseas player for first two months of the next season.
26-year-old Philander made his Test debut against Australia in the recently concluded Test series, and plays for Cape Cobras in the domestic league of South Africa.
Philander has taken six wickets in seven ODIs for South Africa.
In his debut Test, he claimed three wickets for 63 in 21 overs in the first innings. Philander came into limelight with his devastating spell of seven overs wherein he took 5-15 to help South Africa bundle out Australia for mere 47 runs.
Philander was given the Player of the Series award as he took a five-wicket haul in the second Test as well.
Brian Rose, director of cricket at Somerset said, “His all-round ability will be a great asset in our side and I’m sure our supporters will be engaged by his infectious personality.”
