Sourav Ganguly is likely to remain as President of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for the second time. CAB has scaled new heights ever since Ganguly took over the chief role, especially hosting India-Pakistan match at Eden Gardens during the ICC World T20 2016, which was originally scheduled to be played at Dharamsala. Ganguly’s tenure with CAB has hugely profited the board, and is likely to be rewarded for the same. However, there are reports that few CAB members are against the former Indian captain and want a new man at the helm, but Trinamool Congress government is extremely pleased with Ganguly’s commendable efforts in taking the board forward. Thus, with government’s support, it would be difficult for anyone in the presidential elections to replace Ganguly. Another position that is unlikely to be changed is that of the executive post of the association. Son of former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya, Avishek Dalmiya, who was nominated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, holds the position. Read: Sourav Ganguly attends MCC World Committee at Lord’s

“In CAB, two weeks is a long, long time. The last date of filing nomination is July 23 and any member can withdraw on the floor. So it is a very fluid situation at the moment. Even if anyone wishes to contest against Avishek, a couple of phone calls from ruling dispensation can change the picture completely. So no one should speculate anything right now,” a senior CAB official told PTI.

“Let me be very clear, I’m not an opposition. CAB is a team and they will decide whether there would be any election,” Treasurer Biswarup Dey told reporters.
