Former India captain Sourav Ganguly was delivered a letter at his office, stating that if he travels to Midnapore on January 19 his life will be in danger. The death threat, however, was sent by an unknown person named Mr Z Ali. Ganguly is scheduled to travel to North Midnapore, on January 19, for a personal commitment. Some sources say that the family members have suggested Ganguly to stay back. Ganguly is currently the President of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). The letter says that if Ganguly keeps any contact with Ashish Chakraborty, he will be killed.
Chakraborty represents Cricket Association of Bengal at the district level. The letter says that Chakraborty has done fraud in Midnapore, and hence the threat. Sourav later told xtratime.in, “I was supposed to travel to Midnapore for a district sports programme at the Bidyasagar University on January 19. I have been told not to travel there because of security reasons. I have intimated the whole incident to the police authorities. They are taking all the adequate steps.” Ganguly, for that matter, was referred to as Maharaj in the letter, for he was nicknamed so in his childhood.
Back in 2009, Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar had received a threat from Islamic militant, saying the Indian cricketers will be kidnapped.
Members of the Harkat ul-Jehadi Islami, Ashfaq Ahmed and Tariq Mohammed, had made the confession about the threat.
Cricketers across have had received such threats over the years. However, police authorities in Bengal will have to take steps to further investigate the matter.
