The cricket fraternity on Monday welcomed Sourav Ganguly’s joining of the Justice Mukul Mudgal panel, for probe in the spot-fixing and betting scandal that surfaced during the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 tournament.
The panel is headed by Retd Justice Mukul Mudgal and includes advocates L Nageswara Rao, Niloy Dutta and senior IPS officer BB Mishra, PTI reported.
“We had requested Sourav Ganguly to join the IPL probe panel and he has agreed to join us in the investigations. I had telephoned Sourav and he confirmed me about coming on board. We haven’t yet decided on the day when we will meet,” Justice Mudgal said.
“Since our committee member L Nageswara Rao was not present Sunday, we couldn’t fix the date of our next meeting. We will let you know when the committee meets next,” he added.
Cricket historian Boria Majumdar wrote on Twitter, “As expected sourav ganguly joins the mudgal panel to probe ipl fixing. By far the best choice.” (sic)
Majumdar continued on his Facebook page, “Sourav Ganguly is by far the best choice for the Mudgal Panel. 3 reasons- he has played the IPL till a year earlier. Second, he is not in the BCCI payroll and third- he is not associated with any franchise. His addition will only add credibility to the panel. Hopes of a clean up has been enhanced.”
