South Africa registered a facile seven-wicket win over Australia in a World Cup warm-up match played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Set 218 to win, South Africa rode on the solid contributions of Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla before JP Duminy applied the finishing touches with more than five overs to spare.
Since the match was a warm-up contest, both Smith and Amla retired out at the individual score of 65 and 60 respectively, but not before raising 157 for the first wicket.
South Africa just lost the lone wicket of Faf du Plessis (12), who was run-out by Mitchell Johnson. Duminy scored 47 not out off 62 balls while AB de Villiers was 16 not out.
Earlier, Australia once again suffered a batting collapse after skipper Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke rebuild the innings with a fighting century stand after they lost Shane Watson and Brad Haddin early.
But once the Ponting-Clarke partnership was broken, South Africa tightened the noose over them, prising out the remaining six Australian batsmen for just 74 runs.
Dale Steyn was the pick of the South African bowlers, taking 3 for 21 in his eight overs while spinner Robin Peterson snared 3 for 45.
Australia has lost both their World Cup warm-up matches, whereas South Africa will be high on confidence going into the World Cup with two wins under their belt.
Brief Score: Australia 217 all out in 47.1 overs (Michael Clarke 73, Ricky Ponting 55, Cameron White 22, Dale Steyn 3 for 21, Robin Peterson 3 for 45) lost to South Africa 218 for 3 (Graeme Smith 65, Hashim Amla 60, JP Duminy 47) by 7 wickets.
