South Africa lost two wickets in quick succession as Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla were removed in a space of three deliveries in the 30th over of their innings bowled by Chris Gayle. The pair added 127 runs for the second wicket, putting South Africa in firm control of the game before Chris Gayle was introduced into the attack by skipper Jason Holder, getting du Plessis caught by wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin for a score of 62 off 70 balls, before Amla departed two balls later when he was trapped leg-before to head back to the pavilion after scoring 65 off 88 balls. South Africa had earlier lost the wicket of wicket-keeper batsman Quinton de Kock, who perished after scoring three boundaries for a score of 12, getting caught by Andre Russell off the bowling of Jason Holder. The Proteas were initially off to a slow start, before the Amla-du Plessis pair gave their side some momentum, and helped South Africa recover with a steady partnership. Live Updates: South Africa vs West Indies at Sydney

South Africa earlier won the toss and skipper AB de Villiers elected to bat, with the thought of utilising what he described as “perfect batting conditions” for his side’s batsmen to put up a big total on the board and put the West Indians under pressure early in their innings. West Indies skipper Jason Holder named one change, with Suleiman Benn coming in place of Nikita Miller. South Africa decided to go for three changes, with Rilee Rossouw, Farhaan Behardien and Kyle Abbott coming in place of JP Duminy, Wayne Parnell and Vernon Philander.
