South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs said that the Proteas could go on to win the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 if they managed to outplay New Zealand in the much-awaited semi-final clash at the Eden Park in Auckland on March 24.

“My prediction was that if we finally manage to win a semi,we WILL go on and be champions,” Gibbs was quoted as saying on his official Twitter handle @hershybru.

South Africa are set to make their fourth appearance in a World Cup semi-final after handing Sri Lanka a nine-wicket thrashing in the quarter-final at the Sydney Cricket Ground on March 18. Spinners Imran Tahir and JP Duminy shared seven wickets amongst themselves as Sri Lanka were bowled out for paltry 133, before Quinton de Kock guided the Proteas home with a half-century. Gibbs represented South Africa in 90 Tests and 248 One-Day Internationals (ODI), making his last international appearance in 2010 before falling out of favour with the selectors. He is widely remembered for his six sixes against Netherlands during the group stage of the 2007 World Cup, as well as his legendary drop of Steve Waugh during the Super Six against Australia in the 1999 World Cup.
