South African fast bowler Vernon Philander today turned 31, born June, 21, 1984. Philander who has complimented Dale Steyn to perfection in the Test format since his debut in 2011. Philander made his debut against Australia ahead of a more established Morne Morkel needed up picking 8 wickets in the match with a best of 5 for 15 in the second innings. Philander become the second fastest player to reach 50-Test wickets playing just 7 Tests. Philander has been missing from the South Africa Test scene the starting of the year, missing out on the series against England and most importantly the ICC WT20 2016 in India. Philander in 32 Tests for South Africa has picked up 126 wickets at an impressive average of 22.08 at an even more impressive economy rate of 2.75. Taking about his One-Day International cricket he made his debut against Ireland in 2007 way before his Test debut. In 30 ODIs for South Africa he has 41 wickets to his name. Philander is no tail-ender with the bat having scored 4 half-centuries in Tests with a highest of 74 against Pakistan in 2013. In just 32 Test Philander has picked up as many as 9 five-wicket hauls and 2-10 wickets hauls in a match.

Philander has played just 3 First-class matches since his return from the ankle ligament injury that he suffered when South Africa toured India in November 2015. He is set to return to the squad through the South Africa A side. South Africa A will feature in 2 unofficial four-day matches against Australia A.
