Indian batsmen continued to flounder against South Africa, as Dean Elgar and Imran Tahir shared seven wickets between them to bundle up the hosts for paltry 201 in the first innings of the first Test at Mohali. India captain Virat Kohli won the toss and rightly chose to bat, but they lost their first wicket without any runs on board. Murali Vijay scored his 12th half-century in Test career and second against South Africa, which turned out to be a face-saving effort for India. At tea, India were reeling at 168 for seven, having added 86 runs to their total but lost four wickets. Elgar claimed the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha and Amit Mishra, registering his career-best figures, but remained unfortunate that he could not complete a five-wicket haul, which was perhaps on the cards. Vijay slammed his 12th half-century and second against South Africa. When his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan fell for a duck in the second over, Vijay combined with Cheteshwar Pujara to take India ahead. The two batsmen kept South Africa at bay as they added 63 runs for the second wicket. Pujara played really well for his innings of 31, but he failed to read a straight delivery off Elgar and fell in the 38th over.

This was when the floodgates opened for India, as from 63 for 2 they collapsed to 201 all-out. Imran Tahir was not used till the 43rd over into the Indian innings, and he did well to claim two wickets towards the end.

Brief scores:

India 201 (Murali Vijay 75, Cheteshwar Pujara 31, Ravindra Jadeja 38; Dean Elgar 4 for 22, Imran Tahir 2 for 23) vs South Africa
