The squad for South Africa’s tour to Sri Lanka, scheduled to take place in July, was announced today. Speculations on who would lead South Africa in tests was finally put to rest, as Hashim Amla was named South Africa’s next Test skipper. Amla is the first Muslim to ever captain South Africa.
The Test squad has a couple of new names in off-spinner Dane Piedt and batting all-rounder Stiaan van Zyl. Kyle Abbott makes a comeback for South Africa, as the rest of the core team is retained. Beuran Hendricks, who played for South Africa in the 2014 ICC World T20, was included in the One-Day International (ODI) squad for the very first time. The ODI squad will be captained as usual by AB de Villiers, while veteran Jacques Kallis has been included as well.
