Delhi’s spin trio of Dhruv Shorey Varun Sood and Manan Sharma bowled their team to a crucial 63-run first innings lead against Tamil Nadu thereby ensuring a semi-final spot in the U-22 National Cricket Championship for the Col C K Nayudu Trophy.
In reply to Delhi’s first innings score of 315, Tamil Nadu were all-out for 252 in their first essay.
Off-spinner Shorey (3 for 30) and left-arm spinners Sood (3 for 66) and Sharma (2 for 58) effected a collapse that saw eight Tamil Nadu wickets fall for 72 runs after the second wicket pair of opener L Suryaprakash (72, 245b, 5×4) and Vijay Shankar (89, 249b, 8×4) had put on 148 runs.
When Suryaprakash got out, Tamil Nadu were in a strong position at 180 for 3, but the Delhi spinners turned the tide in their favour.
Only Aditya Ganesh, who remained unbeaten with 34 (116b, 3×4) stuck to the wicket and P K Dharma, who made 15 (34b, 1×4, 1×6), offered some resistance.
Five of the six batsmen, who came to the crease later failed to open their account. Karthik Adithya managed 4 runs, while Baba Aparajith, A C Parthiban, M Mohammed, S Senthilnathyan and M Ashwin failed to score.
Replying to Delhi’s first innings total of 315 all out, Tamil Nadu made 252 all out in 119.5 overs.
Delhi in their second innings held on gamely, making 114 for 4 in 41 overs. Delhi’s Aditya Kaushik (23, 71b, 4×4), Dhruv Shorey (18, 40b, 2×4), skipper Milind Kumar (34, 62b, 3×4) and Vaibhav Rawal (not out 20, 33b, 2×4) chipped in with useful runs.(PTI)
