Two time champions Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) skipper Gautam Gambhir on Wednesday completed 3,000 runs in Indian Premier League (IPL). Gambhir reached the landmark in the Eliminator of the 10th edition of the tournament against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Prior to this match, Gambhir needed 9 runs to reach this milestone mark and he did it with a six to Chris Jordan. Gambhir became 1st player to reach the landmark for KKR in the tournament’s history. No other player from the franchise has even touched the 2,000-run mark. Gambhir also becomes the 2nd player to touch this milestone as captain after Virat Kohli (3,016 for RCB). Besides KKR, Gambhir has also represented Delhi Daredevils between 2008 to 2010 and lead in 15 matches with 398 runs under his belt. He is also the 4th player to score 3,000 runs for a single franchise in IPL after Kohli, Raina (3,669 for Chennai Super Kings) and Chris Gayle (3,163 for Royal Challengers Bangalore). The swashbuckling left-hander has been representing KKR since 2011 as captain.
The current IPL season has been the third best season for Gambhir with the bat. He has scored 454 runs in 14 games so far. His best was the 2012 edition wherein he amassed 590 runs and second best came in 2008, piling 534 runs. He is also the only skipper to have lead in more than 100 matches for a single side after MS Dhoni, who captained CSK in 129 games. Gambhir has lead KKR in 107 matches so far.
