Sri Lanka got off to a strong start, strolling to a score of 124 for the loss of one wicket with Lahiru Thirimanne posting his half-century before getting his off-stump knocked out to be dismissed on a score of 65 off 60 deliveries. His wicket triggered a collapse as Sri Lanka began to lose wickets in a heap, with veteran batsmen Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene departing on scores of 39 and a duck respectively. New Zealand earlier finished on a total of 331 for the loss of six wickets, with Corey Anderson propelling the New Zealand innings with a quickfire knock of 75 off 46 deliveries, that contained eight fours and two sixes. Skipper Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson too chipped in with valuable half-centuries, scoring 65 and 57 respectively.
