Sri Lanka batter Kamindu Mendis named ICC men’s emerging player of the year

The 26-year-old batter performed brilliantly across all formats in 2024 and thus, was provided with the prestigious award

Sri Lanka batting sensation Kamindu Mendis has been honoured with the ICC’s emerging player of the year award following an exceptional year in at the international circuit. The 26-year-old left-handed batter performed well throughout all the formats, accumulating a total of 1451 runs in the calendar year at an average of over 50.

Mendis especially performed well in red-ball cricket, scoring 1049 runs in nine matches at an astounding average of 74.92. He was one of only six batters to score over 1000 runs in the format in 2024.

The left-hander scored a highly impressive 5 centuries and 3 half-centuries during the year. His performances were instrumental in Sri Lanka’s push for a maiden ICC World Test Championship Final spot.

During the year, Mendis also equaled the legendary Sir Don Bradman’s record by becoming the joint-third fastest to reach 1000 Test runs, achieving the feat in just 13 innings.

Mendis gave valiant contributions with the bat in Sri Lanka’s victories over teams like Bangladesh, New Zealand and England during the year.

The batter’s performances in 2024 established him as one of the players to watch out for in the coming years. If Mendis keeps on going like this, then he will break many more records in the coming future.
