Sri Lanka’s 106-run win over Australia was their first since 1999, and only just the second overall. The manner in which the hosts defeated the No. 1 team in the world saw appreciation showered towards Angelo Mathews and co. After their mauling in the hands of England, very few gave them the chance. Their first innings show in this match further deepened their woes. But since then, they fought toe to toe with the best team in the world, and before the end of Day 5, beat them by a comfortable margin. Cricket Analyst Harsha Bhogle and Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara led the pack with the congratulatory messages. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Sri Lanka vs Australia, 1st Test at Pallekele
Congrats to @Angelo69Mathews and the team for achieving something no other Sri Lankan team has since 1999. You have done Sri Lanka proud

Well played Sri Lanka. Big big win. Especially given where they were. Wins like these give confidence to emerging teams.

The manner in which Sri Lanka won the match would have been a pleasant sight for their faithful’s. Having been bowled out for a meagre 117 in the first innings, the confidence would have been shattered. But they fought back bravely to dismiss the Aussies for 203.
In their second innings, Kusal Mendis led the charge with a 176 as Sri Lanka managed to post 353, and set a target of 268. And once again, the bowlers stepped up for the hosts. The spin duo of Rangana Herath and Lakshan Sandakan took eight wickets among them to script a emphatic 106-run win for their side.
