Indian cricket fans had a hard time during the recently concluded bilateral series in Sri Lanka, as the local fans proved to be spoilsport for the tourists on several occasions.
According to a report in The Hindu, some Sri Lanka cricket fans went after Indians who were waving flags and spoke obscene words for the second time in three matches.
The Indian fans complained that Sri Lankans threw beer cans, water bottles and glasses on them, adding that some of these Sri Lanka fans were sitting in the Ministers’ box.
An Indian fan, who was sitting in the President’s box said, “We were taken aback with the comments and requested other Sri Lankans to help.”
A Sri Lanka Army officer, who had a little conversation with the Indian fans in the President’s box, failed to intervene and so did the local police.
No official from the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) was present during the incident.
The report added that similar incidences occurred at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, where the two sides played two One-Day Internationals.
India had a successful tour of the island nation, winning the five-match ODI 4-1 and trumping the home side in their one-off Twenty20 by 39 runs in Pallekele on Tuesday.
