It has been reported by multiple sources that Sri Lankan One-Day International (ODI) captain Upul Tharanga has been handed a two-match ODI ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC), following a slow over-rate in the second of the five-match ODI series against visitors India at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy on Thursday. Following Tharanga’s suspension, the Sri Lankan selectors have quickly decided to bring in Test skipper Dinesh Chandimal, along with batsman Lahiru Thirimanne for the nest two ODIs. Sri Lanka were reported to be three overs short following India’s three-wicket win in the second ODI on Thursday. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: India vs Sri Lanka 2017 – 2nd ODI at Kandy
Earlier, Tharanga had suffered a similar two-match ODI ban during the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in England, when Sri Lanka were again a victim of slow over rate, during their group stage game against South Africa. It is also being reported by Cricbuzz that Danushka Gunathilaka has suffered a shoulder injury while fielding during the second ODI and will miss the next two ODIs at least. As a result, Thirimanne is expected to open tha batting while Chandimal would be batting at number four. As for the stand-in skipper for Sri Lanka in the next two games, the decision is yet to be taken. Sources have indicated that Chamara Kapugedera might be named the stand-in skipper, despite Chandimal and Thirimanne being previously groomed for skipper.
