Kumar Sangakkara (43 not out) joined an elite club of batsmen who have scored 10,000 or more runs in Test cricket as he carried Sri Lanka to a wobbly 79 for three at lunch on Day One of the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The former Sri Lanka captain provided the lone resistance from the visitors as Australia’s pacers ran through the top order.

Debutant Jackson Bird (one for 16) got the first wicket of the morning as he found the edge of Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne (5). Mitchell Johnson (one for 44) and Peter Siddle (one for six) too picked up a wicket each as Sri Lanka took lunch with Sangakkara and Thilan Samaraweera at the crease.

Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 79 for 3 (Kumar Sangakkara 43*; Peter Siddle 1 for 6, Jackson Bird 1 for 16) vs Australia
