Former New Zealand coach Steve Rixon is considered as the leading candidate to replace current Australian coach Tim Nielsen.
According to reports, Rixon confirmed the proposal, saying Cricket Australia general manager Michael Brown had contacted him about the role.
Former Australian wicket-keeper is currently the fielding coach of the national Test team.
“They first talked to me about the fielding coaching job back in May, but I’ve put on hold any further talks of taking over from Tim Nielsen until his position is resolved after the tour of South Africa in November,” Rixon said.
The major issue in the negotiations is that Rixon part of the Indian Premier League team Chennai Super Kings, which keeps him away from Australia for seven weeks a year.
