Interim Australia skipper Steve Smith completed his 36th Test century during the second Test of the series against Sri Lanka to become the Baggy Greens’ highest run-scorer in Tests in Asia.
Smith required 27 runs to overtake Ponting’s tally of 1,889 runs in Asia, and he accomplished the feat 15 minutes after lunch, picking a single off Sri Lankan spinner Nishan Peiris.
While Ponting took 48 innings to reach 1,889 runs in Asia, Smith managed to do so in his 42nd innings and that too with a blistering average of 51.08.
Among active players, Smith now ranks as the second-highest scorer in red-ball cricket only behind England’s Joe Root, who has 12,972 Test runs.
With this century, Smith has also now equaled Root and legendary India batter Rahul Dravid in the list of most Test centuries, making him the joint-fifth highest century-maker in Test history.
