Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian great said India need bowlers who can take 20 wickets. According to him, until and unless India gets the bowlers who can 20 wickets. While speaking in the Salaam Cricket conclave, organised by “Aaj Tak“, he said, “We need to take 20 wickets. We need the bowlers for that. Unless India doesn’t do that consistently we cannot win a series in Australia.”
Gavaskar also recollected his memories about playing in Australia. “To be honest, there was no concept of sledging when I played. There was some in my later days, but nothing when I played Australia. The tag of Ugly Australians that was there was not a deserved one. I had lost my cool [MCG 1980-81] was not because of the decision but because I was given a send-off by the Australians with some chosen words that cannot be repeated [smiles].”
Talking about the 1984-85 series the former Indian great said, “It was an excellent team. We had some outstanding fielders in Kapil, Azhar, Madan Lal, The big, full boundaries made it difficult for the batsmen to clear grounds against spinners. Also, Kapil invariably gave us the two early breakthroughs. When youngsters were there, like Siva, Maninder, it was the captain’s job to take them out, make them understand the importance of the situation. I don’t know whether it happens now before I am not a part of the dressing-room now.”
