Treading a defensive path, former captain Sunil Gavaskar on Friday said “we will need to show Test-match like patience” until allegations against BCCI chief N Srinivasan’s son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings ‘team principle’ Gurunath Meiyappan’s involvement in betting on IPL games were proved.
Pressure mounted on Srinivasan to resign from his post in the wake of alleged involvement of Gurunath in betting on IPL matches even as questions were raised over the future of the Chennai franchise.
“Although we are in age of T20, we will have to show a little bit of Test-match like patience for things to completely unravel. So that everybody gets a clearer picture, at the moment the picture is fuzzy. And it’s not fair of us to say things about A, B or C without incontrovertible evidence,” Gavaskar said.
The 35-year-old Gurunath, who has been summoned by Mumbai Police for questioning after actor Vindoo Dara Singh implicated him in betting, flew to Mumbai from Madurai in a chartered aircraft a little after the 5 pm deadline set by police for questioning.
And Gavaskar felt it was better to wait till the inquiry was over.
“We will have to wait and see what the final inquiry and see what the final decision is. Till then it’s all speculations,” he told ‘NDTV’.
On the conflict of interest over Srinivasan’s ownership of the CSK franchise, he said, “All the shareholders of Indian cements could consider them as owners, there could be million shareholders. You can’t point a finger to one person and say look he has 20 more shares than the others.”
Regarding the proposed bill to curb corruption, Gavaskar said, “It is an extremely good idea and the quicker it is passed, the better it will be for Indian sports.”
